Lacey and Larkin Disgusted by POTUS’s Pardon of Joe Arpaio

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, renown journalists in Phoenix AZ continue to speak out against Arpaio, the infamous former Arizona Sheriff. Joe Arpaio is a cold hearted and angry lawman who appeals to the conservative citizens of Maricopa County due to his harsh and at times unmerciful treatment of inmates.

After serving 6 terms in office, he was finally ousted following a conviction of criminal contempt. This charge originates from a 2007 racial profiling lawsuit in which the then Sheriff of Maricopa County chose to ignore.

Phoenix New Times owners Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were relentless in their coverage of Arpaio’s atrocities during his tenure in Maricopa County. For years, they covered his hateful and racist behavior towards members of the Phoenix area community. Arpaio is known for his creation of tent city, an outdoor jail compound where inmates soaked in their own sweat in temperatures that could reach 135 degrees Fahrenheit for crimes that would not even be prosecuted in other states, such as possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Lacey and Larkin covered beating deaths, inmate suicides, and other brutal and life threatening conditions at “tent city”. Sometime referring to this ill run facility as his “concentration camp”, Arpaio seemed to take pleasure in humiliation and cruelty.

This can be seen in the sickening conditions men and women were forced to endure, the pathetic meals that were served to the prisoners, and the near non-existent medical care they received while serving time in Maricopa County. Arpaio and his so-called posse set jail and prison reform back by decades, even insisting that inmates return to the black and white striped uniforms no longer worn in most modern correctional facilities. Following the arrests Larkin and Lacey sued. Eventually, they were awarded a $3.75 million settlement. In the meantime, this court case cost the people of Maricopa County $70 million. In 2013, US District Judge G. Murray Snow ruled that Arpaio had indeed been involved in massive racial profiling and was ordered to reform numerous conditions. But on July 31, 2017, Judge Bolton found the former Sheriff guilty of defying the court order. Enter Donald Trump who provided the most despicable sheriff in the US with the gift of a pardon.

Trump and Arpaio are definitely cut from the same cloth. We are fortunate to have men like Larkin and Lacey to keep the public informed, and who are willing to risk their freedom to expose evil. Although Arpaio was let off the hook, thanks to Lacey and Larkin, the American people know the truth.
